سَرَّحتُI released دَمعيَmy tears لاnot تَسريحَa release إِحسانِkindness
فَلاso do not تَلُمنيyou blame me عَلىfor تَصريحِopen disclosure أَجفانيmy eyelids
I set my tears free, but not in kindness.
So do not blame me for my eyelids' frank disclosure.
لَوif شِئتَyou wished ماnot فاضَoverflowed ماءُwater الناظِرَينِthe two eyes وَلاnor

Had you wished, the water of my two eyes would not have overflowed, nor
would my fires have sunk into a heart that shelters you.
قالواthey said جُموعٌthrongs مِنَof العُذّالِthe reproachers حاشِدَةٌmassing

They said, "Throngs of reproachers are massing
against you—some striking hard, others thrusting fiercely.
فَهَلso, will ...? تُطاعِنُyou trade spear-thrusts قُلتُI said الطعنُthrusting عادَتُناour custom
قالواthey said فَأَينَwhere, then العَواليthe lances قُلتُI said أَغصانيmy branches
So will you trade spear-thrusts?" I said, "Thrusting is our custom."
They said, "Where, then, are the lances?" I said, "My branches."
