أَقولُI say لِمَولىto a retainer نَفسُهُhis soul مِنamong هِبانِهِhis gifts

I say to a retainer whose soul is among his master's gifts:
I say to the master of my soul from his love:
The path of loyalty: spend it in his cause.
The way of loyalty is to spend it in his way
أَقَمناwe remained قَليلاًa little while بَعدَهُafter him وَكَثيرُناand many of us
فَأَكثَرُso most of ماwhat يَهوىhe desires اِنقِضاءُthe ending قَليلِهِhis brief time
We have lingered briefly after him, and many of us
We stayed a little after him, while most of us
desire above all that their brief time should end.
What he desires most is the passing of that little
بِمِقدارِin proportion to ماhow much تَبكيweep العُيونُthe eyes وَنُصدَعand we are shattered
قُلوبُhearts وَيُشقيand torments الحُزنُsorrow بَعدَafter غَليلِهِits burning anguish
For as long as eyes weep and we are shattered
To the extent that eyes weep and hearts crack
in our hearts, and sorrow torments after its burning anguish.
And sorrow grieves after its illness
وَإِلّاand otherwise لَقيناهُwe would meet him وَلَيسَand there is no لِحُزنِهِof mourning for him
عَلَيناupon us دَليلٌa sign يَهتَديhe is guided بِدَليلِهِby its indication
Otherwise we would meet him, with our mourning for him
Otherwise we would have met him, and there would be for his sorrow upon us
leaving no sign upon us by which he could be guided,
No guide guided by his guide
وَظَنٍّand a suspicion بِأَنَّthat الدَهرَtime أَنسىmade forgotten مُصابَهُhis loss

and with a suspicion that time had made us forget his loss
And thinking that time has forgotten his affliction
and effaced sorrow's trace with its trailing skirts.
And healed over the trace of sorrow with its trains
