دَعَوتُI called بِماءٍfor water فيin إِناءٍa vessel فَجاءَنيthen he came to me
دَعَوتُ بِماءٍ في إِناءٍ فَجاءَني
غُلامٌa boy بِهِwith it خَمراًwine فَأَوسَعتُهُso I heaped upon him زَجراrebukes
غُلامٌ بِهِ خَمراً فَأَوسَعتُهُ زَجرا
I called for water in a vessel, and there came to me
I asked for water in a jug, but a boy
a boy bearing what seemed wine, so I scolded him soundly.
Brought me wine, so I scolded him harshly.
فَقالَthen he said هُوَit الماءُthe water القَراحُpure وَإِنَّماand it is only that
فَقالَ هُوَ الماءُ القَراحُ وَإِنَّما
تَجَلّىwas reflected لَهُin it خَدّيmy cheek فَأَوهَمَكَso it made you imagine الخَمراwine
تَجَلّى لَهُ خَدّي فَأَوهَمَكَ الخَمرا
Then he said, "It is pure water; it is only that
He said "This is pure water, crystal clear,
my cheek was reflected in it, making you think it wine."
That took its hue from my rosy cheeks, and so misled you."
