يُلامُis blamed لِماfor what لاnot يَستَطيعُis able وَيُعذَرُand is excused
وَيُسهَبُand is prolonged فيهِabout him القَولُthe talk أَوor فَيُقَصَّرُthen is shortened
He is blamed for what he cannot do, and excused;
and talk of him is drawn out, or else cut short.
وَأَفعالُكُمand your deeds تَنهاهُforbid him لَوif كانَwere يَنتَهيdesists
وَماand not غابَتِwere absent الآراءُthe counsels لَوif كانَwere يَحضُرُis present
Your deeds forbid him—if only he would desist;
nor were counsels absent—if only he were present.
لِسانيmy tongue بِأَمريat my command وَهوَand it مِنّيby me وَمِنكُمُand by you
عَنِfrom البَثِّpouring out grief يُنهىis forbidden أَوor فَبالكَتمِthen to concealment يُؤمَرُis commanded
My tongue is at my command; and it, by me and by you,
is forbidden to pour out grief, or else ordered to conceal it.
فَأَمّاbut as for جُفونيmy eyelids فَهيَthen they بَينَbetween يَدَيكُمُyour hands
ضَميريmy inner thoughts بِهاthrough them يَبدوappear وَسِرِّيَand my secret يَظهَرُcomes to light
But as for my eyelids, they are before you;
my inner thoughts show through them, and my secret is revealed.
صَبَرتُI endured وَكانَand was الصَبرُpatience مِنِّيَof mine عادَةًa habit
وَماbut not صَبَرَwas patient الدَمعُthe tears الَّذيthat يَتَفَجَّرُgush forth
I endured, and patience was my habit,
but the tears that gush forth were not patient.
وَقالَand it said اِستَدِمmaintain صَبريmy patience عَلَيكَwith you فَإِنَّنيfor indeed I
وَإِنand even though كُنتُI had أَبدَيتُI revealed السَرائِرَthe secrets أَستُرُI conceal
And it said, “Maintain my patience with you, for I,
though I have revealed secrets, conceal them.”
أَيَسكُتُdoes it fall silent? عَنabout شَكوىthe complaint الهَوىlove بِكَfor you مَنطِقٌspeech
وَتُعدَىand are infected جُفونيmy eyelids بِالسُّكوتِwith silence وَتُحصَرُand are restrained
Can speech fall silent about the plaint of love for you,
and my eyelids be infected with silence and held in check?
وَمَنand who ذاthis one الَّذيwho يُملاis filled بِهِwith him خَلوَةُthe solitude الهَوىlove
وَفيand in رَوضَةِthe garden التَذكارِremembrance ماذاwhat يُفَجَّرُis made to gush forth
And who is it with whom love's solitude is filled?
And in the garden of remembrance, what is made to gush forth?
وَمَنand who ذاthis one عَلىonto قَلبِthe heart الحَبيبِthe beloved وَدونَهُand before it
مِنَof الغَيظِanger أَغلاقٌlocks تُرىI wonder يَتَسَوَّرُscales the wall
And who, to reach the beloved's heart, when before it
lie locks of anger, would scale the wall, I wonder?
أَغَيرِيَother than me? مَنwho يُدعىis summoned لِيَومِfor a day كَريهَةٍbattle
وَساعَةِand an hour شَكوىcomplaint مِنabout حَبيبٍa beloved فَيَحضُرُand then comes
Who but me is summoned for a day of battle
and an hour of complaint about a beloved—and then comes?
وَماand not نَهَضَتarose مِنfrom قَلبِهِhis heart لَكَfor you رِقَّةٌtenderness
إِذاif لَمnot تَرَyou see الشَكوىthe complaint فَذَيلِيَthen my hem يَعثَرُstumbles
And no tenderness has risen from his heart for you;
if you have not seen the complaint, then my hem stumbles.
