تَظاهَرَhe appeared فيin الدُنياthe world بِأَشرَفِwith the noblest ظاهِرٍoutward appearance
تَظاهَرَ في الدُنيا بِأَشرَفِ ظاهِرٍ
فَلَمso did not تَرَyou see أَنقىpurer مِنهُthan it غَيرَexcept ضَميرِهِhis inner self
فَلَم تَرَ أَنقى مِنهُ غَيرَ ضَميرِهِ
He appeared in the world with the noblest outward bearing;
He pretended in this world to have the noblest of appearances,
so you have seen nothing purer than it save his inner self.
Yet you saw none purer than his conscience.
كَفانِيَit sufficed me فَخراًas pride أَنthat أُسَمّىI be called بِعَبدِهِas his servant
كَفانِيَ فَخراً أَن أُسَمّى بِعَبدِهِ
وَحَسبِيَand sufficient for me هَدياًas guidance اَنthat أَسيرَI walk بِنورِهِby his light
وَحَسبِيَ هَدياً اَن أَسيرَ بِنورِهِ
It is pride enough for me to be called his servant,
It is enough pride for me to be named His servant,
and guidance enough for me to walk by his light.
And it is enough guidance for me to walk in His light.
فَأَيُّfor what أَميرٍprince لَيسَis not يَشرُفُgrows nobler قَدرُهُhis rank
فَأَيُّ أَميرٍ لَيسَ يَشرُفُ قَدرُهُ
إِذاif ماemphatic particle دَعاهُhe called him صادِقاًtruthfully بِأَميرِهِas his prince
إِذا ما دَعاهُ صادِقاً بِأَميرِهِ
For what prince would not be ennobled in rank
What prince does not have his status ennobled,
if he truthfully called him his prince?
If his sovereign calls him truthful?
