    Had my mind not been left bereft of solace,

    my cheek would not have been adorned with tears.

    فَسَوادُهُ في خَدِّهِ بِالخالِ

    I entrusted him with my heart, but he betrayed my trust;

    so its blackness lies on his cheek as a mole.

    Sickness has done to my lifeblood and my limbs

    what Hisn al-Din has done to wealth.

    In his days, no strife remained

    for the people, save enchantment by beauty.

    Spears are called shafts; but once

    they came into your palm, the spears became lofty.
