لِحُبِّيَbecause of my love فيهِfor him أَيُّwhat جَمرٍembers عَلىupon قَلبِheart
فَماso no ليfor me طَريقٌa way لِلمَلامَةِto blame وَالعَتبِand reproach
For my love of him—what embers upon my heart!
For the love in which my heart still burns,
So I have no recourse to blame or reproach.
I have no path for blame or reproach.
وَثَمَّand there غَليلٌa burning thirst لَيسَnot يُطفِئُquenches نارَهُits fire
سِوىexcept خاتَمِthe ring الثَغرِof the mouth المُمَلّاfilled مِنَwith العَذبِsweetness
And there is a burning thirst whose fire nothing quenches
There is a deep yearning that only her sweet lips can quench,
save the ring of the mouth, filled with sweetness.
No other balm can soothe its fire.
وَفيand in القَلبِthe heart كَربٌanguish لاnot أَسُرُّI gladden عَذولَهُits reproacher
بِقَوليby my saying إِذاwhen ماan emphatic particle ضِقتُI felt hemmed in بِالكَربِby anguish واalas! كَربيmy anguish
And in the heart is anguish; I do not gratify its reproacher
In my heart there is sorrow I cannot voice
by saying, whenever anguish hems me in, 'Alas, my anguish!'
When affliction weighs heavy upon me.
إِذاif كانَit is لاnot يَكفيهِsatisfies him شَيءٌanything سِوىexcept دَميmy blood
فَيَكفيthen suffice دُموعُthe tears العَينِof the eye مِنّيfrom me دَمَthe blood القَلبِof the heart
If nothing satisfies him except my blood,
If naught but my blood will satisfy,
then tears from my eye suffice in place of my heart's blood.
Then let the tears from my eyes suffice.
وَإِنand if كانَit is لاno بُدٌّescape مِنَfrom الحَشدِthe mustering لِلعِداfor the enemies
فَحَسبِيَthen enough for me بِالعُذّالِwith the reproachers وَالرُقَباand the watchers حَسبيenough for me
And if a mustering of enemies is unavoidable,
If enemies must be vanquished for her sake,
then the reproachers and watchers are enough for me—enough.
Then let my neck and wrists pay the price.
وَهَيهاتَand far beyond reach! فيماin what سَوَّلَتهُmade it alluring طَماعَتيmy greedy longing
سَمِعتُI heard بِخَصمٍof a foe قَطُّever عَذَّبَtormented بِالعَذبِwith sweetness
And far beyond reach is what my greedy longing has made alluring—
Vain are the hopes my greed whispers to me -
have I ever heard of a foe who tormented with sweetness?
Never have I heard of one tortured by sweet lips.
