    They died of passion for one who could give them life,

    Just as I die of passion for the one through whom I live.

    Indeed, in the longing we pass down, I have found

    In love's creed those I count as forebears.

    فَكانَ لَمّا بَلَونا فَوقَ ما وُصِفا

    They described love to one another in the verse they handed down;

    And when we experienced it, it surpassed what was described.

    A law of theirs, preserved and never lost,

    For everyone who in his passion has endured ruin.

    Their poems wear away on the pages, which are not left

    Black; rather, our eyelids have washed the pages.

    So leave men who refused to reveal what lies within them

    Of ardent love, with the weak who have been cast aside.

    لا بَل نَراهُ عَلى مَن لامَنا شَرَفا

    We do not deem excess in youthful passion excessive;

    No—rather, we deem it an honor that sets us above those who blame us.
