بَلَغتُI reached أَوَّلَat the beginning of عُمريmy life أَرذَلَthe most decrepit stage of العُمُرِlife
فَلَمso ... not يَزِدنيadd to me اِشتِعالُthe blazing of الشَيبِgray hair فيin الشَعرِthe hair
At the beginning of my life I reached its most decrepit age;
so the blaze of gray in my hair made me no older.
وَالشَيبُand gray hair وَالشِعرُand poetry كاناboth were ساكِنيdwellers in خَلَديmy mind
وَإِنَّماand merely اِنتَقَلاthey both moved مِنهُfrom it إِلىto نَظَريmy sight
And gray hair and poetry had both dwelt within my mind;
they have merely moved from it into my sight.
أَمّاas for خَديعَةٌa deception أَحلامٍdreams أُغَرَّI am beguiled بِهاby it
فيin يَقظَتيmy wakefulness فَلَمّاthen when جاءَتit came عَلىupon فِكريmy mind
As for dreams' deception, by which I am beguiled
while awake—when it came into my mind:
بِنdepart ياO شَبابُyouth وَلاand do not تَستَبطِdeem prolonged صُحبَتِناour companionship
لِلشَيبِwith gray hair بَعدَكَafter you وَاِنظُرand see ماwhat عَلىon الإِثرِthe heels
Depart, O youth, and do not think we shall linger
with gray hair after you; and see what follows close behind.
كانَwas الحِمامُdeath أَمامَbefore الصَفوِserenity أَرفَقَkinder بيto me
مِنَthan الحَياةِlife الَّتيwhich أَفضَتled إِلىto الكَدَرِmurk
Death before serenity would have been kinder to me
than life that has led to murk.
عَلاrose above البَيضَthe helmets قَتيرٌgrayness كانَwas أَولَهُits beginning
هَذاthis البَياضُwhiteness الَّذيwhich يَعلوrises عَلىover الشَعرِthe hair
Grayness has overtopped the helmets; its beginning was
this whiteness that rises over the hair.
ماnot ضَلَّwent astray دونَshort of مُرادٍan intended aim فيamong العِداthe foes قَدَرٌfate
فَلاso do not تَقُلsay ليto me سِراجٌa lamp فيin يَدِthe hand of القَدَرِfate
Fate has never fallen short of its aim among foes;
so do not tell me it is a lamp in the hand of Fate.
فَاللَيلُfor the night لَيلُthe night of شَبابِthe youth of المَرءِa person إِنif سَلَكَتtraveled
فيهِthrough it المَنِيَّةُdeath لَمdid not تَسلُكtravel بِمُعتَكِرِthrough dense gloom
For night—the night of a man's youth—if death travels
through it, it travels through no dense gloom.
عُمرُthe life of الفَتىلَيلَةٌthe young man is a night وَالمَوتُand death صُبحَتُهاits morning
وَالشَيبُand gray hair بَينَbetween الدُجىthe darkness وَالصُبحِand morning كَالسَحَرِlike the predawn twilight
A young man's life is a night, and death its morning;
and gray hair, between darkness and morning, is like the predawn twilight.
