اعشَقfall in love فَإِنَّكَfor indeed you لاno مَحالَةَescape تَعذِرُyou excuse
فَإِذاthen, when عَشِقتَyou fell in love فَقُلthen say لَناto us مَنwho يَقبَلُaccepts
Fall in love, for you will inevitably make allowances.
Love, though you'll surely blame me,
Then, when you fall in love, tell us who accepts.
And when you've loved, tell us who accepts.
وَإِذاand when بَداappeared وَجهُthe face الحَبيبِof the beloved وَوَجهُand the face مَنone who
يَلحىreproaches عَلَيهِon his account مَنwhom تُرىI wonder تَتَأَمَّلُyou gaze upon
And when the beloved’s face appears, and the face of one
When the face of the beloved appears, and the face of one
who reproaches you over him—whom, I wonder, will you gaze upon?
Who implores him, whose face, think you, will you gaze on?
وَإِذاand when الدُموعُthe tears وَقَفنَstood still بَينَbetween صَبابَةٍpassionate longing
وَتَجَمُّلٍand composure أَفَمُمسِكٌthen, are you holding back? أَمor مُرسِلُletting flow
And when the tears pause between passionate longing
When tears halt between coquetry
and composure, will you hold them back or let them flow?
And adornment, does the withholder withhold or let flow?
ياO مَنyou who حَكَمتَyou judged عَلَيَّagainst me فيهِconcerning him لِحِكمَةٍfor a wise purpose
قُلsay ليto me فَماfor … not أَنتَyou الَّذيthe one who يَتَقَوَّلُmakes things up
O you who judged against me concerning him, for a wise purpose,
O you who judged me for him out of wisdom,
tell me, for you are not one to make things up.
Tell me, who then are you who makes excuses?
