Is there anything above it but uplands and [unclear]?

And beneath it, nothing but dust and bones.

Then is there any rest for you above it or beneath it?

And you, though alive, are a dead man who speaks.

    أَضا صُبحُها إِلّا لِيَلسِبَ أَرقَمُ

    Its night darkened only for a scorpion to strike by stealth;

its morning shone only for a speckled serpent to bite.

So no scowling face of night distressed me,

nor did a smiling face of morning delight me.

And in it I glimpsed his claw in his crescent,

and it is not something that iron can trim.

    وَمَن لِيَ لَو أَنَّ الهُمومَ تُقَسِّمُ

    I have cares peculiar to my heart;

who would grant me that cares could be shared?

I pity the heart because of them; then they shattered,

in such a crush that the heart almost pities sorrow.

As though my heart were Time's slaughtered prey,

above which the solid spear-shafts shatter.

And justifying a generation's passing after it has passed—

he refused it among peers, except the sciences. [Wording unclear.]

A man may say he is weary of life,

yet recoil from death's disease when it strikes home.

So tell Zuhayr: 'Your claim has no witness

among us, that eighty years bring weariness.'

And he dictates to poetry, which is no deep sea,

nor are its stars drowned or swimming in the deep.

Do you hold that contentment is a shield

for people, though it has not appeared upon them, nor have they shot?

    يُصَرِّفُ مِنها في الخَواطِرِ أَسهُمُ

    The eyes of enemies and loved ones are alike;

arrows from them are directed into one's thoughts.

    And I have—praise be to my Lord—a patient man's self-restraint,

so neither my tears nor blood flow because of either.

Let high renown rejoice that cares are battalions,

    and that I face them alone and rout them;

and that men's faces appear scowling,

and that at their sight I brighten and smile.

You think the rain's torrent will pass you by,

yet rain may fill the vessel until it brims.

    You take faith—woe to you!—as a shield,

though in truth it is nothing but arrows.

And you, through faith, in deceiving a wrongdoer,

are surely more deceitful than he—if you knew—and more unjust.

And tongues have not spoken for fear of him,

though they have arguments: if they found their way, they would speak.

Yes, a day that has passed for you in happiness

is dear; you do not know how tomorrow will arrive.

And it does not help the one who pleases you that you

are pleased with them, when God is not pleased with them.

A promise whose hopeful recipient grasps at water,

and a pact [unclear word]: the one accepting it writes upon water.

A people passed before you; a people passed before them.

We have lost them, save their story, and we too shall be lost.

Those who remained gained nothing by staying behind,

nor did those who departed hold back from going first.

Then if he draws a sword whose back is above my head,

and in it lies my livelihood, he brandishes it as he strikes home.

How many a night whose like the star has never seen—

yet over its cups it smiles!

And it spent the night divulging the secrets of nights,

yet, in reproach of the days, it keeps silent.

And the cupbearer's hand broke the seal upon the pearls,

then it set about sealing the mouths of misfortunes.

You showered down to give delight; and indeed some of those

who guess at the unseen supposed you were being stoned.

And a cupbearer went round with it, while love circled him,

as one circles the revered House—[ending unclear: 'you are stoned'].

    لَعَلَّكَ لي أَوفى نَدامي وَأَسلَمُ

    Then, O star, if you drew near, I would give you its cup to drink;

perhaps you would be the most faithful and safest of my drinking companions.

And for a while we were like Jadhima's two drinking companions,

and the cord of love between us is not severed.
