عَلائِقُbonds سِرِّthe secret الحُبِّlove وَاِنفَضَحَand is exposed الحُبُّlove
When some hearts are cut apart, severed too are
If some hearts are cut to pieces, severed are
the bonds that guard love’s secret, and love is laid bare.
the bonds of love's secret, and love is laid bare.
وَحَمَّلتُهُand I made him bear it فيin قَلبِهِhis heart ماnot تَقَطَّعَتwere severed

Yet I made him bear it in his heart; never were severed
And I made him bear it in his heart; unbroken remained
its bonds from him, though the heart itself was cut apart.
its bonds with him, though the heart had been cut to pieces.
أَأُونِسُهُshall I comfort him? بِشراًcheerfulness فَفيfor in النَفسِthe soul هَيبَةٌawe
وَأُلقيand I lend لَهُto him سَمعاًan ear فَعِندَfor with الهَوىlove عَتبُreproach
Shall I solace him with a drink, when awe dwells within the soul?
Shall I comfort him with cheerfulness? For there is awe in the soul.
And shall I offer him music, when love is attended by reproach?
And shall I lend him an ear? For in love there is reproach.
وَيَستَعذِبُand find sweet النُوّامُthe sleepers طولَthe length of مَنامِهِمtheir sleep
وَسُهدُand sleeplessness الهَوىlove لَوif يَعلَمونَthey knew هُوَit is العَذبُsweet
Sleepers savor the long duration of their sleep,
And sleepers find their long slumber sweet,
but love’s sleeplessness—if only they knew—is what is sweet.
but love's sleeplessness, if they knew, is what is sweet.
فَنادِهِمِso call to them بِالشِعبِin the ravine مِنfrom سِنَةِdrowsiness الكَرىsleep
أَلاtake heed! أَيُّهاO you النُوّامُsleepers وَيحَكُمُalas for you هُبُّواawake!
Then call to them in the mountain pass, out of slumber’s drowsiness:
So call to them in the ravine, rousing them from drowsy sleep:
Hark, O sleepers—woe to you—awake!
Ho, you sleepers! Alas for you—awake!
