You see my proof of love as true, yet turn away.

And I shorten my complaint to you, yet you grow weary.

Toward steeds of tears in the fields of love for you,

the words of reproach race, then gallop.

And our speech rises to carry our complaint to you,

but the eye's tears are more telling and more forceful.

I say: it is as if, on the night of revelry and youth,

I see a lightning-flash before my eye, beckoning and gleaming.

And pleasures are indeed woven while the thread is black,

but pleasures are not woven while the thread is white.

It appeared slender, like a gleam of lightning,

and advanced, spreading toward you and widening.

Then it became like day as it breaks and brightens,

though once it was like veins that flutter and contract.

    وَكانَ وَإِن لَم يَستَبِنهُ يُعَرِّضُ

    Its herald openly declares the dreaded matter;

and formerly he hinted, though he did not make it plain.

It pains us that estrangement is deemed certain

by his insights, while understanding of you is deemed unsound.
