وَأَنزَلَand laid بيupon me بَعضُone of الأَخِلّاءِthe close friends حاجَةًa request
وَكُنتُand I was عَلىin عُسرٍdifficulty بِهاwith it لاnot عَلىin يُسرِease
One of my close friends laid a request before me,
And I was hard-pressed over it, not at ease.
فَأَورَثَso he bequeathed عِنديwith me لاmay … not عَدِمتُI lose جَميلَهُhis kindness
إِلىuntil أَنthat أَتىcame حينٌa span عَلَيهاover it مِنَof الدَهرِtime
So he left it with me—may I never lack his kindness—
Until a span of time had passed over it.
فَلَمّاthen when قَضاهاfulfilled it اللَهُGod عَرَّجَhe stopped by شاكِراًgrateful
فَقُلتُso I said لَهُto him بَلrather أَنتَyou أَجدَرُmore deserving بِالشُكرِof thanks
Then, when God fulfilled it, he stopped by in gratitude.
So I told him, “Rather, you are more deserving of thanks.
فَدونَكَهاso take it مِنّيfrom me وَشُكريand my thanks زِيادَةٌan addition
عَلَيهاto it لِماfor what أَقرَضتَنيهِyou lent to me مِنَof الصَبرِpatience
Take it, then, from me, with my thanks added
To it, for the patience you lent me.
رَواحيmy departure بِعُذريwith my excuse عَنهُfrom him مِمّاamong what يَسُرُّنيpleases me
وَماand not سَرَّنيpleased me لَوif راحَhe departed عَنِّيَfrom me بِالعُذرِwith the excuse
To depart from him bearing my own excuse pleases me;
But it would not please me if he departed from me bearing an excuse.”
