أَهلاًwelcome وَسَهلاًand welcome بِالكِتابِto the letter الواصِلِthat has arrived
أَهلاً وَسَهلاً بِالكِتابِ الواصِلِ
لِيَهيجَto stir up مِنfrom أَلَمِthe pain of الفِراقِparting بَلابِليmy anguish
لِيَهيجَ مِن أَلَمِ الفِراقِ بَلابِلي
A warm welcome to the letter that has arrived!
To stir my anguish with the pain of parting.
وافىit arrived فَواقىand so shielded ليme بِطيبِwith sweet بَشائِرٍglad tidings
وافى فَواقى لي بِطيبِ بَشائِرٍ
وَدَناand drew near فَأَدناand so brought near ليto me سُرورَjoy مَخابِليmy troubled thoughts
وَدَنا فَأَدنا لي سُرورَ مَخابِلي
It arrived and shielded me with sweet glad tidings,
And drew near, bringing gladness to my troubled thoughts.
فَطَفَقتُso I began أُدنيهِdrawing it close عَلىagainst كَبَديmy liver عَسىin the hope that
فَطَفَقتُ أُدنيهِ عَلى كَبَدي عَسى
يُطفيit might quench حَرارَةَthe heat of مُهجَتيmy heart’s blood وَبَلابِليand my anguish
يُطفي حَرارَةَ مُهجَتي وَبَلابِلي
So I began holding it close against my liver, hoping
It might quench the heat of my heart’s blood and my anguish.
