أَعزِزhow grievous عَلَيَّto me بِأَنَّat the fact that المَنزِلَthe abode الساميlofty
بِرَغمِto the dismay of مِصرٍEgypt يَصيرُbecomes المَجلِسَthe court الشاميSyrian
How grievous to me that the lofty abode
Should become the Syrian court, to Egypt's dismay.

Wept with its letters, without my pens.

And your sun has departed with my days.
وَقيلَand it was said ليto me إنَّهُthat he بَحرٌa sea إِمامَتُهُhis leadership
فَقُلتُso I said لاmay ... not لَقِيَencounter الظاميthe thirsty one سِوىother than الطاميthe overflowing sea
And I was told that his leadership is a sea;
So I said, 'May the thirsty encounter nothing but the overflowing sea.'
