أَماdo you not تَرىyou see فيin خَدِّهِhis cheek عَقرَباًa scorpion
أَما تَرى في خَدِّهِ عَقرَباً
لَيسَthere is not لَهاfor it فيin نارِهِhis fire مِنany فَرَقْfear
لَيسَ لَها في نارِهِ مِن فَرَقْ
Do you not see a scorpion on his cheek?
Do you not see a scorpion on his cheek
It has no fear amid his fire.
That has no fear of the fire in him
وَعَقرَبٌand a scorpion قلتمyou (plural) said فَلاso no لامِسٌone who touches
وَعَقرَبٌ قلتم فَلا لامِسٌ
وَقُلتُمُand you (plural) said نَدٌّfragrant incense فَلِمْso why لاnot اِحتَرَقْburned
وَقُلتُمُ نَدٌّ فَلِمْ لا اِحتَرَقْ
And you said, “A scorpion”—so no one touches it.
And you said a scorpion, so no stinger
And you said, “Incense”—so why has it not burned?
And you said embers, so why didn't it burn
سَوداءُblack فيin حَمراءَred تَحكيdepicts لَناfor us
سَوداءُ في حَمراءَ تَحكي لَنا
بَقِيَّةًa remnant مِنof لَيلَةٍa night فيin شَفَقْtwilight
بَقِيَّةً مِن لَيلَةٍ في شَفَقْ
Black amid red, it depicts for us
Black in red, it tells us
A remnant of night amid twilight.
A remainder of a night at dusk
