تُرىI wonder عِندَهُمin their view أَنَّthat العَذابَtorment غَرامُardent love
كَماjust as عِندَناin our view أَنَّthat الفِراقَparting حِمامُdeath
Do they, I wonder, hold torment to be passion,
It seems to them that torment is passion
just as we hold parting to be death,
As it seems to us that parting is life
وَأَنَّand that قُلوبَhearts العاشِقينَthe lovers بَخيلَةٌmiserly

and lovers' hearts to be miserly
And that the hearts of lovers are stingy
with them, not toward them, while eyes are generous?
With them, not against them, and the eyes generous
مَضىhe passed لَمdid not يُسَلِّمgreet مُعرِضاًturning away مُتَعَرِّضاًseeking attention

He passed without a greeting, turning away yet seeking attention;
He left without saying goodbye, turning away
and no sickness surpasses the malady of hearts.
And there is no cure for the sickness of hearts
وَفيand in وَجهِهِhis face لَوeven if لَمdoes not يُحَيِّgreet تَحِيَّةٌa greeting

And in his face, even if he does not greet, there is a greeting,
And if his face did not greet with a greeting
and a greeting meets him without a spoken salutation.
And greet him without saying "Peace," there would be peace
وَبِتناand we spent the night وَباتَتand spent the night لِلخَلِيِّfor the carefree one وَساوِسٌmisgivings
وَحَقَّand was justified وَقَدand indeed جارَacted unjustly العِناقُthe embrace خِصامُa quarrel
And we spent the night, and misgivings spent it with the carefree;
And we spent the night while the imagination of the friend had
and a quarrel was justified, for the embrace had acted unjustly.
Doubts and it is true that embrace has become dispute
