وَدِدتُI wished لَوَif only انَّthat القَلبَthe heart كانَwere لِسانيmy tongue
لَعَلَّperhaps بَياناًeloquence فيهِwithin it فَوقَbeyond بَيانِspeech
I wish my heart were my tongue,
Perhaps within it lies eloquence beyond speech.
وَلَكِنَّهُand yet it لَمّاwhen أَتَاهَcame to it بَيانَهُits eloquence
أَبانَrevealed عَنِof الإِخفاقِfailure بِالخَفَقانِthrough throbbing
Yet when its eloquence came to it,
It revealed its failure through its throbbing.
وَماand not أَهمَلَlet flow الدَمعَthe tears الَّذيwhich هُوَit is هاملٌstreaming
بَريءٌinnocent مِنَof الإِهمالِneglect وَالهَمَلانِand abandonment
And these streaming tears were not let loose
By one innocent of neglect and abandonment.
وَقالَand it said لِمَنto the one يَهواهُit loves him صَرَّفَنيhas swayed me الهَوىpassion
فَفيso in يَدِthe hand of عِتْبِيmy reproach اليَومَtoday ثِنيُthe turning of عِنانيmy reins
And it said to the one it loves: 'Passion has swayed me;
So today my reproach's hand turns my reins.'
فَياso O لَشُجاعٍwhat a brave one إِنif لَقيتُI face بِهِwith it الهَوىpassion
وَإِنand if أَلقَI meet أَحباباًloved ones فَياthen O لِجَبانِwhat a coward
So, how brave it is if I face passion with it,
Yet if I meet loved ones, what a coward!
فَياso O مُمرِضاًone who sickens لَوif طَبَّنيtreated me لَأَقامَنيwould raise me up
وَياand O هادِماًdestroyer لَوif رَقَّwere tender بيtoward me لَبَنانيwould build me up
O you who sicken me—were you to treat me, you would raise me up!
And O you who destroy me—were you gentle with me, you would build me up!
أَأَبهَتُهُwould I slander him? يَوماًever بِشَكوىby complaining of جَفائِهِhis coldness
مَتىwhen كانَwas he يَوماًever واصِليclose to me فَجَفانيthen shunned me
Would I ever slander him by complaining of his coldness?
When was he ever close to me, that he could then shun me?
وَأَفرَطَand he exceeded all bounds أَنواراًin radiance فَضَلَّso was lost مَكانُهُhis place
وَأَفرَطُتُand I exceeded all bounds إِشفاقاًin anxious fear فَضَلَّso was lost مَكانيmy place
And he was so radiant that his place was lost to sight;
And I so full of fear that my place was lost to sight.
فَحَلَّso descended ظَلاميmy darkness أَوor فَحَلَّso descended ضِياؤُهُhis light
فَلَستَso you do not تَراهُsee him أَوor فَلَستَso you do not تَرانيsee me
So my darkness descended—or his light did;
So you do not see him, or you do not see me.
