سَنَّordained النَسيمُthe breeze تَعانُقَthe embracing of الأَغصانِthe branches
أَفَلاwill it not, then يَسُنُّordain تَعانُقَthe embracing of الخُلّانِthe dear friends
The breeze ordained the embrace of branches;
will it not ordain the embrace of friends?
هَذاthis وَبَينَهُمُand between them حَديثٌa conversation ساكِتٌsilent
ناجىwhispered to خَواطِرَهُمtheir thoughts بِغَيرِwithout لِسانِa tongue
All this, while between them a silent conversation
whispered to their thoughts without a tongue.
فَهِمَتunderstood قُلوبُهُمُtheir hearts فَلَمّاthen when لَمdid not يُجِبanswer
عَنهاon their behalf اللِسانُthe tongue أَجابَتِanswered العَينانِthe two eyes
Their hearts understood; then, when no reply came
from the tongue on their behalf, the two eyes answered.
وَالقَلبُand the heart يُدرِكُperceives وَهوَthough it لَيسَis not بِسامِعٍa hearer
لَفظَthe speech of الدُموعِthe tears بِأَلسُنِthrough the tongues of الأَجفانِthe eyelids
And the heart perceives, though it does not hear,
the speech of tears through the eyelids' tongues.
ياO راحِلاًone departing مِنfrom عَينِهِhis eye قَدalready أَصبَحَتhas become
فيamong الناسِpeople مُقفِرَةًdesolate بِلاwithout إِنسانِa person; an eye's pupil
O you departing from his eye, which has now become
desolate among people, without a pupil.
فَإِذاso when جَرَتflow مِنهاfrom it الدُموعُthe tears فَإِنَّماthen only
تَجريthey flow لِسُقياto water ذِكرِكَthe memory of you العَطشانِthirsty
So when tears flow from it, they only
flow to water the thirsty memory of you.
فَلَرُبَّماso perhaps يَسقيwill quench غَليلَكَyour burning thirst ماؤُهاits water
ماas long as دُمتَyou remain تَنزِلُyou dwell مِنهُof it فيin نيرانِfires
So perhaps its water will quench your burning thirst,
as long as you dwell amid its fires.
وَعِجِبتُand I marveled مِنat مُتَوَسِّلٍone seeking a means مُتَوَصِّلٍone gaining access
بِجَهَنَّمَthrough Hell مِنهُof it إِلىto بُستانِa garden
And I marveled at one who seeks a means and gains access
through its Hell to a garden.
أَمّاas for الخَواطِرُthe thoughts فَالمُهاجِرَةُthen, the emigrants الَّتيwho
تُبِعَتwere followed مِنَfrom الأَجفانِthe eyelids بِالإِحسانِwith kindness
As for thoughts, they are the emigrants who
were followed by kindness from the eyelids.
