سَرَتshe journeyed by night فَكَأَنَّso it was as though اللَيلَthe night قَبَّلَkissed خَدِّهاher cheek
فَأَبقىso it left behind بهon it قِطعاًpatches وَأَسبَلَand let hang down عَقرَباa scorpion
She journeyed by night, as though the night had kissed her cheek,
leaving patches upon it and letting a scorpion hang down.
فَماso not اِستَغرَبَتshe found strange فيin مَوطِنِthe abode of الحُبِّlove غُربَتيmy exile
فَهَذاfor this الدُجىdarkness فيin صُبحِهاher dawn قَدindeed تَغَرَّباhas become a stranger
So she did not find my exile strange in love’s abode,
for this darkness has indeed become a stranger in her dawn.
