    O rising-place of beauty’s sun, not of dawn,

    you dispelled night’s darkness with the cup and your smile.

    Nor did the mouth diminish it by a tiny ant’s weight,

    and the honey of dark lips set the tiny ants crawling.

    فَعَينِيَ كَالخَنساءِ تَبكي عَلى صَخرِ

    And my heart is of rock, yet I have lost it;

    so my eye, like al-Khansāʾ, weeps for Sakhr.

    O forelocked one, about what his mouth’s marvels have done to me—

    ask the eye, for the eye dwells beside the sea.
