رَضيتُI was content بِهِwith him مَولىًas a master وَلَمand did not يَرضَنيaccept me عَبداas a slave
وَلَمand did not يُعطِنيgive me عَفواًsurplus wealth وَلَمand did not أُعطِهِgive him الجَهداthe utmost effort
I accepted him as master, but he would not accept me as a slave.
He gave me no mere surplus, nor did I give him my utmost effort.
وَمازادَنيand he gave me no more فيin القُربِnearness عَنbeyond حالَةِthe state of النَوىseparation
فَأَشكُرَso I might be grateful for قُرباًnearness مِنهُto him أَوor أَشكُرَbe grateful for البُعداdistance
Nor did he give me more in nearness than in separation,
that I might be grateful for nearness to him, or grateful for distance.
وَلاand not ناسَمتنيwafted over me مِنfrom نَواحيهِhis quarters نَفحَةٌa breeze
وَجَدتُI found لِرَيّاهاfrom its fragrance عَلىupon كَبِديmy liver بَرداcoolness
Nor did a breeze waft over me from his quarters
whose fragrance I found cooling upon my liver.
وَواجَهَنيand met me وَجهُthe face of الغِنىwealth مُتَبَسِّماًsmiling
وَوَلّىand turned إِلَيَّtoward me الفَقرُpoverty ظَهراًits back فَلاso may it not رُدّاbe brought back
And the face of wealth met me, smiling,
and poverty turned its back on me—may it never return!
فَلاso do not تَذكُرواmention وَفداًa delegation عَلىto آلِthe house of بَرمَكٍBarmak
فَلَوfor if لَحِقواthey had encountered ذاthis الجودَgenerosity كانواthey would have been لَهُto him وَفداa delegation
So do not speak of a delegation to the house of Barmak:
for had they witnessed this generosity, they would have come to him as a delegation.
فَياso, oh لَيتَif only قَوميmy people يَعلَمونَknew بِأَنَّنيthat I
بَلَغتُI have reached إِلىto حَدٍّa limit تجاوزَwent beyond بِيwith me الحَدّاthe limit
Oh, if only my people knew that I
have reached a limit that has carried me beyond all limits.
