The one he torments dies as captives die,
His tormented one dies as the captives died.
And the talebearer never knew his hidden meaning.
And the slanderer knew nothing of his hidden meaning.

He sought your favor, or guarded against your coldness—
He sought your favor, or guarded against your coldness.
What, then, did he guard against, and what did he seek?
So what did he guard against, and what did he seek?

He never caught the scent of complaint, nor wearied of love,
And he did not smell complaint, nor grow weary of love.
Nor sought what he desired—but they went astray.
Nor did he seek what he loves; but they grew haughty.
