وَماand … not كُنتُI was أَرضىaccept مِنfrom عُلاكَyour eminence بِذاwith this الجَفاcoldness
وَلَكِنَّهُbut it is مَنwhoever غابَis absent نَصيبُهُhis share
I would not have accepted this coldness from your exalted self.
I would not be pleased with your aloofness and disdain
Yet he who is absent [loses] his share.
But he who is absent, his share is lost
وَلَوand if غَيرُكُمsomeone other than you يَرميshoots at الفُؤادَthe heart بِسَهمِهِwith his arrow
لَماthen … not كانَwould have been مِمَّنamong those whom قَدalready أَصابَhe struck يُصيبُهُhe strikes it
And if someone other than you shot his arrow at the heart,
And if it were others who shot my heart with their arrows
It would not have been among those he struck.
It would not have been from those who hit their mark
وَماand … not لِيَfor me فيمَنin those whom فَرَّقَparted الدَهرُTime أُسوَةٌa consoling example
كَأَنَّas though مُحِبّاًa lover ماnot نَآهُdrew away from him حَبيبُهُhis beloved
And I find no consolation in those whom Time has parted,
And I have no example in those whom time has parted
As though no lover's beloved had ever drawn away from him.
As if a lover never saw his beloved
