And for a graceful youth, my shirt of piety was torn,

And my tears poured upon it as streaming blood.

I hid it from a reproacher; if I am content to

die of love for him, why should he be angry?

For it is the shirt I brought at nightfall,

And I brought no false blood upon it.

And no death comes without a preceding cause,

And his eyelid is the surest cause of death.

And beauty's lines are clear in his eyes,

And vowel marks of lashes have made them clearer still—

    وَفي جُفوني أَرى مُستَودَع السُحُبِ

    Like clouds, dark in appearance and hanging low;

And in my eyelids I see the clouds' storehouse.

Your pointed lashes went before your eyelids,

Like arrows that gave warning of swords.

My tears flowed over him as silver; then, when

he raised the price of union, my eyelid bought it with gold.
