وَقَفَstood الطَيفُthe dream-phantom بِجَفنٍby an eyelid كَالطَلَلْlike a ruined dwelling
سائِلاًasking أَينَwhere الكَرىslumber أَينَwhere رَحَلْit departed
The dream-phantom stood by an eyelid like a ruined dwelling,
Asking, 'Where is slumber? Where has it gone?'
إِنَّماonly كانَused to الكَرىslumber يَسكُنُهاdwell in it
فَالكَرىfor slumber مِنfrom وَصلِهِمunion with them ثُمَّthen اِنتَقَلdeparted
Slumber alone used to dwell there;
For slumber came of union with them, then departed.
فَجَرىthen flowed الفَجرُthe dawn وَأَخفىand concealed ناصِعاًsomething radiant
فَالتَقىthen met الماءُthe water بِمَقدورٍwith something foreordained نَزَلthat descended
Then dawn streamed forth and hid a radiant form;
And the water met a fate sent down.
إِنَّهُindeed it is ياO طَيفُphantom طوفانٌa flood طَغىoverflowed all bounds
وَاِبنُand the son of نوحٍNoah لَيسَdoes not يُنجيهِsave him الجَبَلthe mountain
It is, O phantom, a flood overflowing all bounds,
And the mountain cannot save Noah's son.
إِنَّindeed قَلبيmy heart مِنamong قُلوبٍhearts لَمdid not تُبِنreveal
سِرَّهاtheir secret لَوif لَمhad not تُبَيِّنهُmade it plain المُقَلthe eyes
Indeed, my heart is among hearts that would not have revealed
Their secret, had the eyes not made it plain.
حالَتِchanged الأَشياءُthings عَنfrom حالاتِهاtheir states
فَتَوَلّىso undertook الماءُthe water إيقادَthe kindling of الغُلَلburning thirst
Things have changed from what they were,
So water undertook to kindle burning thirst.
فَتَرىso you see الدَمعَtears دِماءًas blood لَمhas not تَسِلflowed
مِنfrom سُيوفٍswords بِجُفونٍin eyelids / sword-sheaths لَمhave not تُسَلbeen drawn
So you see tears as blood that has not flowed
From swords in eyelid-sheaths that have not been drawn.
وَعَذولٍand a censurer هَبِلَتهُmay she be bereaved of him أُمُّهُhis mother
لَمdid not يَقُلsay قَولاًa word فَلاso let not يَعلُbe exalted هُبَلHubal
And a censurer—may his mother be bereaved of him—
Has said no word—so let Hubal not be exalted.
وَحَبيبٍand a beloved لَمdid not أَقُلI say يَهجُرُنيhe forsakes me
إِنَّماonly يُهجَرُis forsaken مَنone who قالَsaid وَصَلhe granted union
And a beloved—I never said, 'He forsakes me';
Only one who has said, 'He granted union,' is forsaken.
رُبَّmany a بُستانِgarden of حَديثٍconversation بَينَناbetween us
فَتَّحَmade blossom العَتبُreproach بِهِin it وَردَthe roses of الخَجَلbashfulness
Many a garden of conversation between us—
Reproach made the roses of bashfulness bloom within it.
لاnot يُمَلُّis found tiresome الوَردُthe rose فِيon وَجنَتِهِhis cheek
وَقُصَارَىand the ultimate fate of كُلِّevery وَردٍrose أَنto يُمَلbe found tiresome
One never tires of the rose upon his cheek,
And every rose's ultimate fate is to pall.
