ياO غَزالاًgazelle لَهُfor him السُيوفُthe swords حِجابٌa veil
فيin فُؤاديmy heart أَضعافُmultiples of تِلكَthose الحُجْبِthe veils
O gazelle, for whom swords form a veil,
O gazelle with swords as his veil
my heart holds those veils many times over.
In my heart are manifold those veils
ماnever عَهِدناwe have known وَالنائِباتُthough calamities كَثيرٌare many
أَنَّthat ضَيفاًa guest يُضامُis wronged بَينَamong العُرْبِthe Arabs
We have never known—though calamities are many—
We are unused, though substitutes are many
a guest to be wronged among the Arabs.
That a guest should be pressed among the Arabs
أَغَليلاًburning thirst? وَالماءُwhile the water فَوقَupon الثَناياthe front teeth
وَهَواناًand humiliation بَينَamid القَناthe spears وَالقُضبِand the blades
Burning thirst, while water lies upon the front teeth?
In shackles, while water is above the folds
And humiliation amid spears and blades?
And abasement between spear and bow
أَينَwhere تِلكَthose الرُسومُthe traces أَينَwhere تُراهاdo you see them
تَبِعَتthey followed فيin الرحيلِthe departure إثرَin the wake of الركبthe caravan
Where are those traces? Where do you think they are?
Where are those forms, where do you see them
They followed in the caravan's wake as it departed.
They followed the caravan’s track
أتُرىI wonder ياO زمانُTime أنتَyou معنَّىtormented
بِرُباهاby their hills كَمِثلِjust like قَلبِthe heart of الصَبِّthe lovesick lover
I wonder, O Time, are you tormented
Do you see, O fate, you have afflicted
by their hills, like the heart of a lovesick lover?
Their lord as the heart of youth
زَفَرَتsighed بِالصَّباwith the east wind صُدورُbosoms of اللَياليthe nights
وَبَكَتand wept بِالحَياwith rain جُفونُeyelids of الشُهبِthe bright stars
The nights' bosoms sighed with the east wind,
The dawns’ hearts sighed with the zephyr
and the bright stars' eyelids wept with rain.
And the gray-haired eyelids wept with shame
