وَدَدتُI wished أَنthat لَوif only تَراجَعناwe exchanged words بِأَلسُنِناwith our tongues
كَفىenough تَراجُعُناour exchanging words مِنfrom أَلسُنِthe tongues الكُتُبِthe letters
I wish we could converse with our own tongues;
Enough of our exchanges through the tongues of letters!
وَكَمand how many رَسائِلِletters تَسليمٍgreeting مُحَمَّلَةٍentrusted
لِلطَيفِto the dream-phantom وَالبَرقِand the lightning وَالأَرواحِand the winds وَالسُحُبِand the clouds
How many letters of greeting have been entrusted
To the dream-phantom, the lightning, the winds, and the clouds!
وَلَيسَand is not يَخلوfree حَديثُspeech الطَيفِthe dream-phantom مِنof جَزَعٍanguish
وَلاnor حَديثُspeech نَسيمِbreeze الريحِthe wind مِنof نُوَبِcalamities
And the dream-phantom's speech is not free of anguish,
Nor the speech of the wind's breeze free of calamities,
وَلاnor تَبسُّمُsmiling وَجهِface البَرقِthe lightning مِنof مَلَقٍflattery
وَلاnor تَصوُّبُpouring down دَمعِtears السُحبِthe clouds مِنof حَصَبِhailstones
Nor the smile on lightning's face free of flattery,
Nor the clouds' falling tears free of hailstones.
وَفيand in اللِقاءِmeeting لَوَif only اَنَّthat الدَهرَtime جادَbestowed generously بِهِwith it
مِنَof الأَحاديثِconversations صَفوٌthe pure part غَيرُnot مُؤتَشِبِmingled
And in meeting—if only time would grant it—
Lies pure, unmingled conversation.
هُنالِكَthere اِشتَعَلَتblazed نارٌa fire فَماso not اِشتَعَلَتburned
غَيرُexcept الضُلوعِthe ribs وَلاnor أَورَيتُI kindled بِالحَطَبِwith firewood
There a fire blazed, yet nothing burned
But my ribs; nor did I kindle it with firewood.
صَحِبتُI accompanied دُنيايَmy world لاnot مُستَصحِباًtaking as a companion لِرِضاًfor contentment
وَالمَوتُand death مِنbecause of صُحبَةِcompanionship الدُنياthis world عَلىin غَضَبِanger
I kept my world company, with no contentment as companion;
And death is angered by companionship with this world.

يَذوقُtastes ذائِقُهُits taster ضَرباًa kind مِنَof الضَرَبِthick white honey
A saying to which the eloquent lend an ear; yet
Whoever tastes it tastes no kind of honey.
هَذاthis المُحِبُّthe lover المُخِبُّhastening السَيرِthe journey نَحوَكُمُtoward you
تُراهُyou see him يَرجِعُreturns عَنكُمfrom you خائِبَdisappointed الخَبَبِthe swift pace
This lover, hastening on his way toward you—
Do you think he will return from you, his haste unrewarded?
مُعَمَّرٌlong-lived وُدُّهُhis love فيكُمfor you وَمُغتَبِطٌand joyful
رَجاؤُهُhis hope مِنكُمُfrom you كَالراحِlike wine وَالحَبَبِand the bubbles
Long-lived is his love for you, and joyful
His hope in you—like wine and its bubbles.
