Of the Arabs’ noblest stock, whose hands

give in plenty and in want.

They walk among their guests and their swords,

their wild beasts and birds—all their dependents.

And they are rising suns, and sometimes

you grasp securely fastened ropes from them.

He walks with them as lamps while your day is dark,

so you see slender spears tipped with wicks.

    يَستَلئِمُ العاري ثِيابَ صِلالِ

    Like vipers, the venomous breath of their thrusts circles round;

the naked man dons vipers’ garments as armor.

And at times he kindles them, and endures their heat,

so he becomes a wood-gatherer, and at other times one who burns.
