لِلحُسنِfor beauty فيin ذاthis الوَجهِface مُعجِزَةٌa miracle
نَطَقَتit spoke لِتُخرِسَto silence ناطِقَthe spokesman of العُقَلاthe wise
Beauty has a miracle in this face;
It spoke to silence the spokesman of the wise:
مِنof حَيَّةٍa serpent فيin الجَمرِthe embers ماnot اِحتَرَقَتit burned
وَالجَمرُand the embers فَوقَupon الخَدِّthe cheek ماnot اِشتَعَلاblazed
A serpent amid embers, yet it has not burned,
And the embers upon the cheek have not blazed.
لَوif أَنَّهاthat it تِلكَthat one الَّتيwhich اِنقَلَبَتwas transformed
يَومَon the day of العَصاthe staff لَمdid not يَعصِdisobey مَنwhoever جَهِلاwas ignorant
Had it been that one which was transformed
On the day of the staff, the ignorant would not have disobeyed.
