إِذاwhen أَقفَرَتbecomes desolate لِلعُمرِfor life دارٌa dwelling فَبَعدَهاthen after it
مِنَof القَبرِthe grave دارٌa dwelling حينَwhen تُسكَنُis inhabited تُقفِرُlies desolate
When a dwelling stands deserted for a lifetime, then after it
When life's dwelling becomes desolate, after it comes
comes a dwelling in the grave that, when inhabited, lies desolate.
a dwelling in the grave, desolate when inhabited.
فَياso O نافِراًone recoiling عَنهاfrom it بِعَينٍwith an eye وَحاجِبٍand a brow
سَتَأنَسُyou will feel at ease مِنهُfrom it بِالَّذيwith that which عَنهُfrom it تَنفِرُyou recoil
O you who recoil from it with eye and brow,
So, O you who recoil from it with eye and brow,
you will grow familiar with it through the very thing from which you recoil.
you will grow at ease with what in it you recoil from.

Reflect; speak to the soul, and understand its answer:
Reflect, speak to the soul, and understand its answer:
Does the dust hold mere dust of you—or a jewel within it?
“Is there dust from you in the dust, or a jewel within it?”
وَقُلand say إِنَّهُindeed, it is قَولٌan utterance عَظيمٌmomentous وَإِنَّهُand indeed, He

And say: “It is a weighty utterance; and surely He
And say: “Indeed, it is a momentous utterance, and He
punishes if she gives her answer, and pardons and forgives.”
punishes if it speaks, and pardons and forgives.”
