حَكىresembled هالَةًa halo عُقِدَتwas formed فيin السَماthe sky
Your reply, so far beyond reach,
resembled a halo set in the sky.
فَياso, O عَجَباًwonder هالَةٌa halo قَدindeed بَدَتappeared
وَأَنتَand you تُرىare seen عِندَهاbeside it مُظلِماdark
So, how strange: a halo has appeared,
while you are seen beside it, dark.
وَلَوand if أَبصَرَsaw الدَهرُTime ماnot قَدَّموthey advanced
كَyou وَلَكِنand yet لِمَنfor one who فيهِin him عَمَّpervaded العَمىblindness
And had Time been able to see, they would not have advanced
you—but [how could sight come] to one in whom blindness reigns?
وَماand not كُنتَyou were إِلّاexcept كَمِثلِlike السَراthe mirage (first part)
بِfinal part of 'mirage' يَسوقُdrives إِلَيهِtoward it سِياطُwhips الظَماthirst
And you were nothing but like a mirage,
toward which the whips of thirst drive one.
