    Those given to passion and the blind were kept busy

    in the Fire, while the Gardens too are busy.

    An occupation that made me wretched, and whose outcome is

    all the worry and humiliation you could wish for.

    And they say, 'He is busy,' and I am envied

    by one I wish were like me in his work.

    Not all occupations are alike, so do not

    let engulfing depths carry you away in ignorance.

    وَكِلاهُما نُسميهِ بِالظِلِّ

    And there is shade with branches, and shade with grass;

    and we call both of them 'shade.'

    Not every lightning flash is worth watching, for how often

    has calamity appeared in the guise of a downpour!

    I do not look to one who is easy to approach

    except for a request that is not easy.

    لَقَد اِتَّقَيتُ القَتلَ بِالقَتلِ

    And I fear its onslaught, so I mix it;

    I have indeed warded off killing with killing.
