أَمّاas for تَقاطُعُناour mutual estrangement فَلاso no رُسُلٌmessengers
مِنكُمfrom you تُلِمُّvisit بِناupon us وَلاnor كُتُبُletters
As for our estrangement, no messengers
from you visit us, nor any letters.
أَوor أَنthat تَقولَyou say كَتَبتُI wrote مُعتَذِراًapologizing
مِنfor أَنthat أَعيشَI live وَأَنتُمُwhile you غُيُبُabsent
Or you might say, “I wrote in apology
for living while you are absent.”
وَالحَقُّand the truth فيماin what بَينَbetween ذاكَthat وَذاand this
إِنif كانَis عِندَكَin your judgment حَقُّناour due يَجِبُis binding
And the truth lies between that and this,
if you regard our due as binding.
كانَتwas مَوَدَّتُكَyour affection المُدامَthe wine وَفَتkept faith
فَتَصَرَّمَتthen it ended فَإِذاand behold هِيَit الحَبَبُthe bubbles
Your affection was wine; it kept faith,
then it ended—and behold, it was bubbles.
أَفَعَنwas it, then, from رِضاًcontentment كانَتwas قَطيعَتُكُمyour severing of ties
فَبِأَيِّthen in what شَيءٍthing يَعرِضُappears الغَضَبُanger
Was it, then, out of contentment that you broke with us?
Then how would anger show itself?
هَذاthis عِقابُهُمُtheir punishment لِعَبدِهِمُfor their slave
راضينَpleased عَنهُwith him فَكَيفَthen how لَوif غَضِبواthey were angry
This is the punishment they give their slave,
while pleased with him—what, then, if they were angry?
أَلِفَgrew accustomed to العَذابُtorment حَصىpebbles قُلوبِهِمُtheir hearts
فَكَأَنَّهاso they seem to be لِجَهَنَّمٍfor Hell حَطَبُfirewood
Torment has grown used to the pebbles of their hearts,
so they seem to be firewood for Hell.
