    No tears remain after you,

to betray a secret or disclose it.

    As for sickness, it

    endures, though no ribs remain.

Indeed, I passed by the dwellings,

    and humility had shrouded them.

    As though, among those dwellings,

the bodies of your slain were dwellings.

    The lovers' necks bowed,

    and love's adornment is submission.

O departing ones, will you, I wonder,

    or slumber, return to us?

And I was weak in patience when

    swift travel carried you away.

If my tears were of any avail,

blood would flow along with the tears.

You departed as stars with no

    rising except within my secrets.

You hope for their return, since they are near,

and a star's nature is to return.

I have a need that will be met if

    your heart intercedes for me.

And one blames me who lacks, between

    his ribs, a shattered heart.

I swore: you are no sincere adviser,

nor am I a listener, either.

You burdened me with what I cannot

bear, and told me what I will not obey.

And with my heart's blood, O my reproacher,

I buy the beloved, and do not sell.

The adviser wove, yet failed to please

my mind with his lucid words.

    Welcome to Malik's reign,

it and spring came early to us.

    مِن تَحتِهِ الحِصنُ المَنيعُ

    He is the fortress on the day of battle;

beneath him is the impregnable fortress.

He raises a sky of battle-dust, and the downpour

from its clouds is potent poison.

    And battles quaked above

his enemies, then fell upon them.

If the gleaming, slender swords pray,

then the spears bow with them.

And the radiance of his face is like

a dawn breaking forth within its night.
