ياO ذاyou الَّذيwho مَرَجَmingled البَحرَينِthe two seas خاطِرُهُhis mind
بِحراًa sea مِنَof العِلمِknowledge أَوor بَحراًa sea مِنَof الذَهَبِgold
O you whose mind has mingled the two seas:
a sea of knowledge, or a sea of gold.
لِمwhy خَمرَةُthe wine الرومِthe Romans تَنهىturns away اليَومَtoday سائِلَهاits seeker
وَقَدand already سَنَنتَyou prescribed إِلَيناto us خَمرَةَthe wine العَرَبِthe Arabs
Why does the wine of the Romans turn away its seeker today,
when you have prescribed for us the wine of the Arabs?
حاشاكَfar be it from you فيin كُلِّevery فِعلٍdeed مِنfrom مُناقَضَةِcontradiction
فَرَّقتَyou separated فيin الفِعلِdeed بَعدَafter الجَمعِunion فيin النَسَبِlineage
Far be it from you to contradict yourself in any deed;
you parted them in deed after joining them in lineage.
لِأَكتُبَنَّI shall surely write عَنِon behalf of السُلطانِthe sultan مُحتَسِباًacting as a moral censor
وَالسَيفُand the sword أَصدَقُmost truthful ماwhat يُنبيكَinforms you عَنof كُتُبيmy letters
I shall surely write on the sultan's behalf, acting as a moral censor,
and the sword tells you most truthfully of my letters,
بِالنَهيِwith a ban عَنagainst كُلِّevery خَمرٍwine لِلعُقولِfor minds بِهاthrough it
سُكرٌintoxication وَأَسلبُand more despoiling مِنthan خَمرِwine اِبنَةِdaughter العِنَبِgrapes
with a ban on every wine that brings minds
intoxication and robs them more than wine, the grape's daughter.
فَاِشغَلso occupy لِسانِيَmy tongue أَنthat يُنهَىbe restrained بِسَكرَتِهِby its drunkenness
فَأَلسُنُfor tongues السُكرِdrunkenness لاnot يُعرِبنَthey give expression عَنto أَرَبِa desire
So occupy my tongue, that its drunkenness may restrain it;
for drunken tongues give expression to no desire.
وَسَقِّنيand give me a drink خَمرَةًwine لِلعَقلِfor the mind مُطرِبَةًdelight-giving
فيهاin it فَماfor ... not طَلَبيmy desire مِنهاfrom it سِوىother than طَرَبيmy delight
And give me wine that makes the mind rejoice
in it; for I seek from it nothing but my delight,
مِنfrom كُلِّevery بَيتٍverse كَبَيتٍlike a house أَنتَyou ساكِنُهُits inhabitant
كِلاهُماboth of them فيin المَعاليlofty honors سَيِّدُforemost النَسَبِlineage
from every verse like the house in which you dwell:
both, in lofty distinction, are foremost in lineage.
هَذاthis وَكُلُّand every يَدٍhand إِنif لَمdoes not تُفِدbestow وَتُفِتand deprive
وَتَحتَويand seize قَصَبَthe prize العَلياءِlofty honor بِالقُضُبِwith blades
This—and every hand, if it does not bestow and deprive,
and seize the prize of lofty honor with blades,
فَلاthen may no وَهَتهاweakened it قَناةٌa lance لاno وَلاnor قَلَمٌa pen
فيهاin it فَتِلكَfor that يَدٌa hand حَمّالَةُa bearer of الحَطَبِfirewood
then may no lance weaken it—no, nor a pen
within it; for that is a hand that carries firewood.
نَظمٌverse كَمَنظومِlike a string of حَبِّbeads الدُرِّpearls أَرشَفَنيmade me sip
مِنfrom خَمرَةِthe wine الحُبِّlove لاnot مِنfrom خَمرَةِthe wine الحَبَبِbubbles
Verse like strung pearl-beads has given me a sip
of the wine of love, not of the wine of bubbles.
أَشِعَّةٌrays تَحتَbeneath سُحبِclouds الكَأسِthe cup رائِعَةٌwondrous
تَكسوclothe المَفاليسَthe penniless أَكماماًsleeves مِنَof الذَهَبِgold
Wondrous rays beneath the clouds of the cup
clothe the penniless in sleeves of gold,
حَتّىuntil كَأَنَّas though قَميصيmy shirt حينَwhen تَنفُذُهُthey pierce it
قَميصُthe shirt يوسُفَJoseph وافىarrived بِالدَمِwith the blood الكَذِبِfalse
until my shirt, when they pierce it, seems like
Joseph's shirt, which came with false blood.
فَالآنَso now قَدalready حَمَلَتit carried آلاتِهاits implements حَطَباًas firewood
قُمrise ياO زَمانُTime إِلَيهاtoward it بَلrather أَباfather of لَهَبِflame
So now it has carried its implements as firewood;
rise toward it, O Time—nay, O Abu Lahab!
