وَلَمّاand when بَداappeared خَطٌّa line of down بِخَدِّon the cheek of مُعَذِّبيmy tormentor
وَلَمّا بَدا خَطٌّ بِخَدِّ مُعَذِّبي
كَظُلمَةِlike the darkness of لَيلٍnight فيin ضِياءِthe light of نَهارِday
كَظُلمَةِ لَيلٍ في ضِياءِ نَهارِ
And when a line of down appeared on my tormentor’s cheek,
When a line appeared on my tormentor's cheek
like night’s darkness in the light of day,
Like night's darkness amid day's radiance
خَلَعتُI cast off عِذاريmy bridle فيin هَواهُlove for him وَلَمand did not أَزَلcease
خَلَعتُ عِذاري في هَواهُ وَلَم أَزَل
خَليعَhaving cast off عِذارٍa bridle فيamid جَديدِnew-grown عِذارِcheek-down
خَليعَ عِذارٍ في جَديدِ عِذارِ
I cast off my bridle in love for him, and have remained
I cast off my excuse for loving him and have not ceased
unbridled amid his newly grown cheek-down.
To be a wretch excusing new torment
