صَبَرتُI endured patiently عَلىin the face of اِستِبطاءِthe perceived delay of عاقِبَةِthe outcome of الصَبرِpatience
وَحارَبتُand I fought دَهريmy fate لَوif only نُصِرتُI had been aided عَلىagainst الدَهرِfate
I bore patiently the slow coming of patience’s outcome.
I endured the delay in patience’s reward.
I warred against my fate—if only I had been aided against Fate.
And I fought my fate—if only I had been aided against fate.
وَأَرغَمتُand I humbled عَينَthe eye of الشامِتينَthose who gloat بِظاهِريby my outward bearing
وَإِنand even though رَغِمَتwas humbled نَفسيmy soul بِماby what هُوَit فيin سِرّيmy secret heart
With my outward bearing, I humbled the gloaters’ gaze,
And with my outward bearing I humbled the gloaters’ gaze,
though my soul was crushed by what lay hidden within me.
Even though my soul was humbled by what lay in my secret heart.
فَقيرٌpoor وَيَأبىand refuses اللَهُGod أَنthat أَسأَلَI ask for الغِنىwealth

Though poor, God will not have me ask for riches,
I am poor, yet God will not let me beg for wealth,
nor let the ease apparent in me know aught of hardship.
Or let prosperity be told of the hardship I bear.
