وَرَمَتand hurled يَدُthe hand الأَيّامِof the days نَحوِيَtoward me أَسهُماًarrows
وَرَمَت يَدُ الأَيّامِ نَحوِيَ أَسهُماً
أَمسَيتُI have become مِنهاfrom them إِنif نَهَضتُI rise مُتَرَّساarmed with a shield
أَمسَيتُ مِنها إِن نَهَضتُ مُتَرَّسا
And the hand of time hurled arrows toward me;

أَفَيَأمُلُthen does he hope? الغاديthe morning traveler إِلَيكَto you مُهَجِّراًtraveling in the midday heat
أَفَيَأمُلُ الغادي إِلَيكَ مُهَجِّراً
ماwhat يُعجِزُis beyond the power of الساريthe night traveler إِلَيكَto you مُغَلِّساtraveling before dawn
ما يُعجِزُ الساري إِلَيكَ مُغَلِّسا
Then does the morning traveler, coming to you in the midday heat, hope for
Can one returning to you, an exile, hope
What eludes the night traveler coming to you before dawn?
That which hampers one coming to you, shackled
