And never did Time fulfill a desire for me through nearness to him,
Time granted me no reprieve from longing's grip
Without that fulfilled desire demanding further desires.
Except my longing outstripped all time could give
ياO مَنone who شَقيتُI suffered بِهِbecause of him دُنياin this world وَآخِرَةًand in the next
تُرىI wonder عَرَفتَhave you known سِوىother than الدارَينِthe two abodes ليfor me داراan abode
O you through whom I have suffered in this world and the next,
O you whom I've wronged in this world and the next
I wonder, do you know an abode for me other than those two?
Do you see a home for me but the fire's pit?
النارُthe fire فيin هَذِهِthis one لِلقَلبِfor the heart تَدخُلُهُit enters it
وَتِلكَand that one فَالجِسمُthen the body فيهاin it يَدخُلُenters الناراthe fire
In this abode, fire enters the heart;
My heart enters the flames in this life on earth
And in that one, the body enters the fire.
And my body enters the fires in the world's berth
أَشقىmost wretched البَرِيَّةِof creatures مَنظوراًlooked upon وَمُنتَظِراًand waiting
هَذاthis الضَعيفُweak one الَّذيwho يَهواكَloves you جَبّاراtyrannical
The most wretched of creatures, looked upon and waiting,
Most wretched am I, awaiting and in sight
Is this weak one who loves you, tyrant that you are.
Of whom my weak soul desires, almighty in might
إِنّاindeed we إِلىto اللَهِGod إِنif لَمnot يَغتَفِرHe forgives زَلَليmy lapses
أَستَغفِرُI seek forgiveness from اللَهَGod سَتّاراConcealer of faults وَغَفّاراand Oft-Forgiving
Indeed, to God we return; if He does not forgive my lapses,
If God does not forgive my trespasses in full
I seek forgiveness from God, the Concealer of faults, the Oft-Forgiving.
I ask God's pardon, most veiling and forgiving
