وَإِنَّكَand indeed you إِنif أَلبَستَنيyou clothe me ثَوبَa robe نِعمَةٍfavor
خطرتُI strode proudly بِبُردٍin a mantle مِنهُof it بِالحَمدِwith praise مُعلَمِembroidered
And indeed, if you clothe me in a robe of favor,
Though you may clothe me in a garment of blessing,
I shall stride proudly in a mantle of it, embroidered with praise.
I tread carefully, giving thanks for what little it brings,
وَلَيسَتand is not يَدٌa favor أَودَعتَهاyou entrusted it عِندَwith ناطِقٍa speaker
كَمِثلِlike يَدٍa favor أَودَعتَهاyou entrusted it عِندَwith مُفحَمِa speechless person
And a favor you bestow upon a speaker is not
For a gift placed in the hands of one who speaks
Like a favor you bestow upon a speechless man.
Is not like a gift placed in hands that are silent.
فَهَذيso this one عَلَتrose مِنfrom مُفصِحٍan eloquent speaker فَوقَabove مُسفِرٍsomething radiant
وَهَذيand this one هَوَتsank مِنfrom مُفحَمٍa speechless person تَحتbeneath مُظلِمِsomething dark
Thus the one rises, through an eloquent speaker, above the light,
This rose up from the lips of the eloquent speaker,
While the other sinks, through a speechless man, beneath the dark.
That fell from the quiet beneath the darkened veil.
وَكَمand how often شَحَّتِhas been miserly الدُنياthe world بِلَهجَةِwith the voice of مادِحٍa praiser
بَليغٍeloquent فَلَمso did not تُبلِغهُreach him مِنَّةُa favor مُنعِمِa benefactor
And how often the world has been miserly with the voice of a praiser
And how often the world was stingy with the words of a praiser,
Of eloquence, so that no benefactor's favor has reached him.
A master of speech, yet the giver's bounty was restrained.
