And how often I spent the night thirsty for the fount of dusky lips,

though I was drowning in a sea of tears.

We bade farewell to two companies: one, beloved ones

dear to us; the other, our hearts.

There is no relief in complaint—and what comfort

in what gladdened enemies and saddened a friend?

And we indeed mourn each dwelling according to its worth,

as shown by our weeping carnelian tears for al-ʿAqīq.

And the stream of tears kept flowing at their dwelling,

until we saw the tears had become a path.

O doves of al-Liwā, I—as love bears witness—

am surely more entitled than you to embrace the leafy bough.

And how often it spent the night, birdsong making its side sway,

and by morning its frame was wasted and slender,

until, from its sickness, we took it for a lover,

and lovers would see in it a beloved.

Whenever its stem grew slender, its pomegranate blossom emerging,

you would think the bān branches had turned to red anemones.
