وَيَعلَمُand he knows مِنّيof me أَنَّthat شيمَتِيَmy nature الوَفاfidelity
بِمَجديto my honor وَأَنَّand that الدهرَTime شيمَتُهُits nature الغَدرُtreachery
And he knows of me that my nature is fidelity
to my honor, and that Time's nature is treachery.
وَعِندِيَand in my keeping مِنof أَسرارِهِمtheir secrets كُلُّevery مَيِّتٍdead one
وَلَيسَand there is no لَهُfor it حَتّىuntil مَماتِهِمُtheir death نَشرُresurrection
And every secret of theirs lies dead in my keeping,
with no resurrection for it until their death.
وَكَمand how often لُمتُI blamed فيهِمon their account دَهرَهُمtheir Time فَظَلَمتُهُand thus I wronged it
وَكُلَّand every صَديقٍfriend لَيسَdoes not يُنصِفُكَtreat you fairly الدَهرُTime
How often I blamed their Time on their account, and thus wronged it!
And Time does not deal fairly with you in every friend.
أَيَبيَضُّdoes it turn white? رَأسيmy head وَالأَسىwhile grief بَينَbetween أَضلُعيmy ribs
كَأَنَّas though هُمومَworries المَرءِa man's مَسكَنُهاtheir dwelling الشِعرُhair
Does my head turn white while grief lies between my ribs,
as though a man's worries dwell in his hair?
وَأَحسَبُand I suppose أَنَّthat الفِكرَthought لِلهَمّfor worry ناقِصٌdiminishing
وَيَكثُرُand grows هَمّيmy worry كُلَّماwhenever كَثُرَgrows الفِكرُthought
And I suppose that thought diminishes worry,
yet my worry grows whenever thought grows.
