وَبِالأَشعارِ تَعرِفُ قائِليها

وَبِالأَشعارِ تَعرِفُ قائِليها

كَما حُدِّثتَ عَن نَجرٍ بِنَجلِ

كَما حُدِّثتَ عَن نَجرٍ بِنَجلِ

And by poems you recognize their composers,

And from poems you know their authors

Just as you were told of a lineage through its offspring.

As you were told of Najr of Najl

سَبَقتُ بِها فَقَد صارَت لِقَومٍ

سَبَقتُ بِها فَقَد صارَت لِقَومٍ

مَحارِبَ وَالَّذي بَعدي مُصَلِّي

مَحارِبَ وَالَّذي بَعدي مُصَلِّي

I took the lead with them; thus they have become for some

I have surpassed with them so they became for a people

Prayer niches—and the one behind me is a worshipper, a runner-up.
