وَلاand may ... not بَرِحَتcease تَرقىascend مَنازِلُstations of عِزَّةٍglory
تَوَدُّwish البُدورُthe full moons أَنَّهاthat they فيin المَنازِلِthe stations
And may it never cease to climb the stations of glory,
May you never cease ascending the stations of glory,
while full moons long to dwell within those mansions.
Where the full moons wish that they might dwell.
وَتَلقىand you face خُطوبَcalamities of الدَهرِtime إِنif جَدَّgrows serious جِدُّهاtheir gravity
بِعَزمِwith the resolve of مُجِدٍّone in earnest فيin عَزيمَةِthe determination of هازِلِone at play
It confronts the calamities of Time when their gravity turns grave,
And face time's calamities, should their gravity grow grave,
with an earnest one’s resolve against the purpose of a trifler.
With the resolve of one in earnest, in the spirit of one at play;
بِفَخرٍwith glory يَرُدُّholds back النَجمَthe star لَيسَis not بِصاعِدٍascending
وَجودٍand generosity يَرُدُّholds back القَطرَthe rain لَيسَis not بِنازِلِdescending
With glory that turns the star back, no longer rising,
With glory that holds the star back from rising,
and bounty that turns the rain back, no longer falling;
And generosity that holds the rain back from falling.
سِماكُSimāk (a star-name) فَخارٍglory لاnot يُسَمّىis called بِأَعزَلٍunarmed

a Simāk-star of pride, yet never called “the Unarmed,”
A Simāk of glory, never called 'unarmed';
his governorship need fear no one who would depose him.
His rule fears no one who would dismiss him.
أَقولُI say إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle جادَhe gives generously هَلis there مِنany مُفاخِرٍrival in glory
كَقَوليas I say إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle جَدَّhe is earnest هَلis there مِنany مُنازِلِchallenger in combat
I say, whenever he gives: “Is there any rival in glory?”
When he gives, I say: 'Is there any rival in glory?'
just as I say, whenever he grows earnest: “Is there any challenger?”
As I say when he grows earnest: 'Is there any challenger in combat?'
وَكَمand how many لَكَyou have مِنof يَومٍa day أَغَرَّwhite-blazed مُحَجَّلٍwhite-footed

How many a radiant day is yours—white-blazed and white-footed—
And how many a day of yours is white-blazed and white-footed,
on which we drive back calamities, striking at their forelocks,
On which we forcibly repel calamities' leaping assaults;

where blood is wine and heads are seen as its jars,
Where blood is wine, and skulls are seen as its wine-jars,
tapped by their brown spears as though by lancets.
And it has been tapped with spigots of their tawny spears.

There sword-blades appear like a playful beauty’s cheek,
And sword-blades appear there like a playful lover's cheek,
and lances like the supple waist of a flirt.
And lances appear there like a courting lover's flank.
ظَلَمناكَwe wronged you إِذwhen قِسناwe compared بِكَwith you الغَيثَthe rain نازِلاًfalling
وَماand not اِبنُa son of لَبونٍa milk-giving she-camel فيin القِياسِcomparison كَبازِلِlike a mature camel
We wronged you when we compared you with the rain pouring down;
We wronged you when we compared falling rain with you:
for, measured side by side, a two-year-old camel is nothing like a full-grown one.
And a two-year-old camel is not, in comparison, like a full-grown one.
