يَموتُdies الفَتىthe young man شَوقاًout of longing إِلىfor الحُسنِbeauty وَحدَهُit alone
يَموتُ الفَتى شَوقاً إِلى الحُسنِ وَحدَهُ
فَكَيفَso how بِمَنwith one who قَدalready فارَقَhas parted from الحُسنَbeauty وَالحُسنىand goodness
فَكَيفَ بِمَن قَد فارَقَ الحُسنَ وَالحُسنى
A young man dies of longing for beauty alone.
The young man dies longing for beauty alone
What, then, of one who has parted from beauty and goodness?
So what of one who has left both beauty and glory
وَماand not مِصرُEgypt مُذsince فارَقتَهاyou left her غَيرُother than لَفظَةٍa word
وَما مِصرُ مُذ فارَقتَها غَيرُ لَفظَةٍ
فَرَدَّso may He restore عَلَيهاto her اللَهُGod مِنthrough قُربِكَyour nearness المَعنىthe meaning
فَرَدَّ عَلَيها اللَهُ مِن قُربِكَ المَعنى
And since you left her, Egypt is nothing but a word.
And Egypt has been naught but a word since you left
So may God restore her meaning through your nearness.
Yet God has restored its meaning through your nearness
