    May God water that dwelling with the return of its people—

    for that is more beneficial than a cloud and its rain.

    If Time gathers together his scattered company,

    thereafter no fault could be charged against his Time.

    How, then, do you think his longings will be after a year,

    if this is his longing after a month?

    Far away, yet near to you in his inward heart,

    he sees you in thought whenever he cannot visit you.

    وَفارَقَكُم في جَمرِهِ دونَ سِرِّهِ

    His body journeyed away from you, but not his heart;

    he parted from you in his embers, but not in his secret self.

    Though the gatherings of his affection may be empty of you,

    the gatherings of his gratitude are inhabited by you.

    وَطَلعَةُ بَدرِ الدينِ طَلعَةُ بَدرِهِ

    O night, do not draw darkness down upon yourself;

    Badr al-Din’s countenance is the countenance of its full moon.
