And lords whose gatherings have been given drink—
A pillow that has watered their gatherings,
the water their vineyards had made one crave.
the water that their vineyards hoped for.
أَيُّwhat لِسانٍtongue لِمَنfor one who يَذُمُّهُمُreviles them
وَأَيُّand what قَولٍspeech لِمَنfor one who يَرومُهُمُseeks them
What tongue has anyone who reviles them?
What tongue for one who dispraises them?
And what words has anyone who seeks them?
What words for one who envies them?
قالَhe said فَماthen what الخَمرُthe wine فيin مَخادِعِهِمtheir private chambers
فَقُلتُso I said فيin كَهفِهِمtheir cave رَقيمُهُمُtheir Raqim
He said, “Then what is the wine in their private chambers?”
He said, so where is the wine in their dwellings?
So I said, “In their cave, it is their Raqim.”
I said, in their cave lies their secret.
قالَhe said فَلِلمَزجِthen, for the mixing فَوقَهاabove it حَنَشٌa snake
قُلتُI said فَسَكرانُهُمthen their drunkard سَليمُهُمُtheir snake-bitten one (literally, their sound one)
He said, “Then above it is a snake for the mixing.”
He said, for the mixer above it, a strainer?
I said, “Then their drunkard is their snake-bitten man.”
I said, their intoxicated ones are intact.
ماnot تورِدُbrings forth الخَمرُthe wine غَيرَother than ماwhat وَرَدَتit encountered
فَلَمso ... did not يَلُمهاhe blames it لَكِنbut يَلومُهُمُhe blames them
Wine brings forth nothing but what it encountered.
Wine brings nothing but what it has brought.
So he did not blame it, but he blames them.
Yet he does not blame it, rather blames them.
سَفيهُهاits fool شارِباًwhile drinking سَقيهُهُمُunclear as written; probably their fool
حَليمُهاits forbearing man صاحِياًwhile sober حَليمُهُمُtheir forbearing man
Its fool, when drinking, is [their fool?].
Its fool while drinking is their water-bearer.
Its forbearing man, when sober, is their forbearing man.
Its wise while sober is their wise one.
