مَنَنتَyou bestowed a favor عَلىupon عَينيmy eye بِوَجهِكَwith your face رَوضَةًa garden
فَلاso do not تَنسَforget دَمعيmy tears فَهوَfor it فيكَfor you غَمامُclouds
You bestowed upon my eyes, in your face, a garden;
You graced my eye with your face—a garden;
so do not forget my tears—for over you they are clouds.
So do not forget my tears, for they are clouds for you.
وَقُلتَand you said بِأَنّيthat I بَعدَafter بَينِكَparting from you لَمdid not أَمُتdie
وَكُلُّand every حَياةٍlife لاnot تَسُرُّbrings joy حِمامُdeath
You said that, after parting from you, I had not died;
And you said I had not died after parting from you;
but any life that brings no joy is death.
Yet every life that brings no joy is death.
وَأَعرَضتَand you turned away لَمّاwhen لَمdid not أُكَلِّمكَspeak to you مِنfrom ضَنىًwasting illness
وَتَرديدُand the repetition أَنفاسِbreaths المُحِبِّof the lover كَلامُspeech
You turned away when, wasted by love, I did not speak to you;
And you turned away when, wasted by illness, I did not speak to you;
yet the lover’s repeated breaths are speech.
Yet the lover’s repeated breaths are speech.
فَياso, oh عَجَباًwonder مِنat طَيفِهِhis phantom كَيفَhow لَمdid not يَزُرvisit
نَهاراًby day وَحَوليand around me لِلهُمومِof cares ظَلامُdarkness
How strange that his phantom did not come to visit
So how strange his phantom—why has it not visited
by day, when the darkness of cares surrounds me.
By day, though the darkness of cares surrounds me?
وَماand why لِلكَرىwith slumber لاnot يَهتَديfinds its way لِمَضاجِعيto my beds
وَفيهاand in them لِساريfor the night traveler المُظلِماتِdark nights ضِرامُa blazing fire
Why can slumber not find its way to my bed,
And why does slumber not find its way to my beds,
when there, for a traveler through darkness, a fire blazes?
Though in them burns a fire for the traveler through dark nights?
